Great Things Take Time

Can you smell it? Can ya? I know I can…Yes that is the smell of hockey season fully underway and I am EXCITED. Over the last few weeks the Dutchwoman have experienced some up’s and down’s. Earlier in the month of October we took a trip down to Boston to face off against two great teams, Northeastern and Boston University.  Unfortunately we weren’t able to pull off the W’s but worked on a lot throughout the weekend. The following weekend we were up against our neighbor rivals RPI for an additional non-conference game. We put up a great fight and in the end earned a 3-2 win over RPI with a pair of goals scored by Freshman Courtney ‘Tina’ Turner and the game-winning goal going to Christine ‘Nicki’ Valente. This was the first win against RPI since the 2005 season. This win will most definitely add to the rival between to the two teams as we have two more conference games against RPI later in the season.

Coming off a big win we headed up to North Country last weekend to play Clarkson and St. Lawrence…and well sometimes you lose and sometimes you win…this weekend we did not win. Unfortunately the scores from the weekend did not represent the games that we played.  To look at it in the most positive way is that the best thing about losing is learning.  After this weekend we recognized our weaknesses and the things that we really needed to work on as a team. From this we have recovered from the weekend and moved on but most importantly we learned from our mistakes and ultimately understand that great things take time. Week by week and game by game, we will get better. This weekend we go back to back against…the big ol’ orange… and by orange…I mean Syracuse.

And now I would like to take this time to introduce the five new freshmen…and transfer to the Union College Dutchwoman. Courtney ‘Tina’ Turner from Milton, Massachusetts has contributed significantly to our offensive game putting in three solid goals so far. Another freshman that has a knack for scoring is Jessica ‘Huh?’ Kaminsky from La Salle, Manitoba who has become a strong presence on our power play. Kathryn ‘Tomcat’ Tomaselli from Cranston, Rhode Island has given our offense a creative edge, creating many opportunities for her line. Jamie ‘Snipe’ Smith coming from Stamford, Connecticut has a great shot off the rush. Rebecca ‘Mustang’ Babiak from Winnipeg, Manitoba has become a strong center in both the defensive and offensive ends. Lizzy ‘Noodle’ Otten has a rocket of a shot coming from the point, creating great rebound opportunities for our forwards. Our new goalie Madeleine ‘Pokecheck’ Dahl from Edina, Minnesota already shows great potential for becoming a wall of a goalie, as she is very active in the net.  Last but not least is our lone transfer coming from Elmira College, Haley ‘Transfer’ Welch, she has jumped into Division I hockey very well.

Our seven new players have adapted very well to the team and the fast pace of division I hockey, demonstrating immense potential but most importantly have become important members of our hockey family at Union.  We now have two ECAC games under our belt and are ready for more!
